Forest – Coaster

I’ve written about these guys before, and they really do know how to write a great rock song. It’s just as well, because it’s the kind of music that needs a good melody in there. Simple rock songs tend to be that way, if the song is good then all those fuzzy guitars and fizzing cymbals are firing with lively energy, if the song isn’t so great then it’s just a great mass of hideous and embarrassing noise. This track is obviously from the former category, it is loud and abrasive but it’s melodically on the money, and it’s a great listen. There’s something distinctive about the lead vocalist’s voice which I just plain like, it’s not something that’s easy to describe because it’s such a subjective thing, but to me it’s a very likable voice! The backing vocals are silly, that’s the best word for them, and they’re a stroke of genius really because they add this surprising madness to an otherwise familiar sound. They’re loud, loose, and partly pitch-shifted into chipmunk territory, which makes for a wonderfully odd barrage of “ahhhs” to accompany the straight lead vocal. It’s weird, and it’s great.
